GaSLOCoLI is Seeking a Music Director for The Mikado: A Long Island Fairytale

The Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island is seeking a Music Director for our 2022 production of The Mikado: A Long Island Fairytale. Both positions are key creative team members for a touring production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic, re-imagined to celebrate Long Island’s history and community.

Our Music Director works closely with the director / choreographer and assistant director to oversee all musical aspects of the production, including helping develop the production conceptually, participating in auditions and casting principal roles, hiring the orchestra, rehearsing singers and orchestra members, creating voice part recordings of music, and conducting the orchestra in performance.

The term of the engagement for the position begins in late-December, when auditions for principals will be held. A full-company “meet and greet” / principal read-through of dialogue takes place late December/Early January. Musical rehearsals for chorus and principals will begin the first week of January, 2022. Staging rehearsals begin in early to mid-February.

Rehearsals are typically Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:30 – 10:00 PM in central Nassau County. Dates: December 2021-June 2022 Tuesdays & Thursday 7:30-10pm

Performances with piano / principals begin in mid-April and run through the end of May.

Full-orchestra/company performances take place from approximately the last two weekends of June through the second weekend of July, 2022.

Each position pays a base salary of $2,000.00.

COVID-19 Policies

All members of the company will be required to provide proof of vaccination. Masks (provided by the company) will be worn during all rehearsals, and social distancing will be maintained to the extent possible. Masks will be required during performances  (to the extent possible) for all those not on stage.

Recent credits include Plato’s Ion with αgora θeoria, Philip Massinger’s The Unnatural Combat with Sweet Tea Shakespeare, and All About Image / We are the Elite at the New York International Fringe Festival. Tony holds an M.F.A. in directing from Mary Baldwin University’s partner program with the American Shakespeare Center, and is a proud Associate Member of SDC, the union representing professional Stage Directors and Choreographers, and is the Artistic Director of Bad Quarto Productions. Tony’s thoughts on theatre have been published in the journals Borrowers and Lenders, SDC Journal, and Didaskalia, and in Stage Directions, Breaking Character, and Northern New York Flair magazines. Tony is particularly interested in new stagings of classic works that confront the history of white supremacy that have contextualized the meanings of those works for far too long. If you’re interested in learning more about his work, you can find Tony online at

From the director:

By eschewing the “yellow face” tropes that have become part of the standard stagings of The Mikado following W.S. Gilbert’s death, we have the opportunity to share a vision of The Mikado that tells a fairytale of Long Island, letting it breathe as a great work of comic opera without the need to denigrate or dehumanize anyone. We have the opportunity to help Long Island see a future for this opera better than its past.

And we have an opportunity to remind us all that we’ve been through this before, even if not in our lifetimes. Better days lie ahead. The “roaring 20s” followed the influenza pandemic of 1918, and we have the chance to make the 20s roar again.
